Tucker Corporation was an ambitious American automobile company that briefly flourished in the late 1940s, founded by Preston Tucker. The company is best known for producing the Tucker 48, also known as the Tucker Torpedo, which was heralded for its advanced safety features and innovative design at a time when such innovations were not common in the automotive industry. The Tucker 48 featured a directional third headlight, a rear engine, and a safety windshield designed to pop out in the event of a crash to protect passengers. Despite the innovative aspects of the car and a strong public interest, the company faced significant legal and financial challenges that led to its closure in 1949, with only 51 cars produced. The story of Tucker has since become a symbol of American ingenuity and the challenges of disrupting the automotive industry.
